Packaging Design

Packaging Design

One of my favorite classes at Columbia was packaging design where we had the opportunity to create packaging for real or created products. I enjoyed playing with typography to create dynamic and visually appealing packages. As a class, we went through rounds of critique and revisions to come up with our final designs.

For this project, we had to redesign an existing product. I chose Whole Paws, a Whole Foods brand of dog treats.

I created mockups of the packaging and then executed a photoshoot.

In this assignment, we could either redesign an existing product or invent something new then create branding and packaging.

I chose to make candles (something I taught myself specifically for this project) and wanted to address the excessive waste created by leftover candle vessels. My concept was that if the vessel was as desirable as the candle, people would keep and use it after the candle burned. With that in mind, I scoured antique shops for different types of drinkware and made them into candles.

I wanted to highlight the variety of vessels so chose clear packaging with minimal obstructions. The scents were numbered for easy identification if a customer wanted to re-purchase the same scent in a different vessel in the future.

The photoshoot for these was particularly fun.
